Art celebration

The Society is not a Big Brother-esque group, but a new space in the
Plaza District: part studio space, part living space and part warehouse
space.

“The Society is a
community-driven, collective art space that pushes big ideas,” said
Jerrod Smith, facilitator of the venue. “Here’s this collective space.
Show up with your ideas and let’s see if we can help each other make
things we’re passionate about.”

He
got the idea for The Society from his painting studio in school — an
open space, he said, where he’d always bump into people he knew.

“There
are creative people all over OKC, and a lot don’t have the space they
need,” Smith said. “Creativity is centered around community: showing up
every day, being serious about your work, but having other people who
keep you accountable, give you advice or notes on what you’re doing.
It’s a space where you can dream really big, and as a community, we make
that happen.”

Kicking it off right, The Society hosts a launch party from 7 to 11 p.m.

Friday, followed by an after party from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Both are at the studio, 1609 Blackwelder, Suite 4.

The
free party comes complete with music from Jabee, food trucks, live BMX
demonstrations and live painting. At the after party, cover is $5, but
includes another set by Jabee and an open bar.
