Art glass

Local artist Nicki Albright is “Serving Up Color” with her new exhibition at In Your Eye Gallery, in the Paseo Arts District. Albright first became interested in glass about 35 years ago.

“I remember driving down 13th Street, which was filled with Victorian homes that were full of stained glass, and I wanted to make those beautiful windows,” Albright said. “I started doing research, trial and error, and this and that when my son was small.”

After several years, she began to experiment with kiln-form glass. To create her masterpieces, she uses techniques of kiln fusing and slumping, forming anything from vases to dinnerware and wall décor.

“I used to tell my students that they were only limited by their imagination,” Albright said. “Because you can paint with glass — you can do whatever you want to with it.”

Albright said working with glass is like painting, even though she jokes about “not being able to even draw a stick figure.” She chooses bright colors, and some pieces seen in her new exhibit include a sushi plate with a large ribbon of color through the middle and a swirl vase. She loves her art, “instead of just paint by number.”

“Serving Up Color” will be on display from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday through July 30. For more information, call 525-2161 or visit —Emily Summars
