Artist of the Quarantine: Carlos Barboza

"I generally have a hard time calling myself an artist. It feels like, for about 20 or so years of my life, I simply practiced painting and drawing. I wasn’t sure where or how to apply that skill set, so I lacked focus and spent most of the time recreating instead of creating," Carlos Barboza said. "It wasn’t until I painted my first mural last year that I finally found what I’ve been looking for. From a subtle expression in a portrait to the texture of a person’s skin, my work has always been driven by the details. Nothing in my artistic career has ever felt more right than seeing those details realized on a 50-foot wall. So during this quarantine period, I have been making decisions on what to focus on and what I will create moving forward. All of this to say despite the current circumstances, I’m excited for my future as an artist."
