There are five bears at the Oklahoma City Zoo, but only one of them will receive some special treatment this week.

Winnie-the-Pooh is 83 this year, and the story's original author, A.A. Milne, has a birthday this month. The lovable bear's legacy will be celebrated from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Saturday at the zoo, 2101 N.E. 50th. Kids of all ages are invited to the party to enjoy snacks, make crafts and meet the yellow bear and his woodland friends.

"We may do some messy crafts with honey and bring in a live, woodland creature," said senior naturalist educator Amy Stephens.

Winnie-the-Pooh was once known as Edward Bear, who was the main character in a series of stories by Milne. Named after a teddy bear belonging to his son, the bear's rights were purchased by Walt Disney in 1961. Since then, the bear and his friends have been featured in a number of animated productions, becoming icons.

"We are always looking for fun things to do in the winter, and A.A. Milne's birthday is in January," Stephens said. "It's been so popular (in the past) that we're doing it again this year."
Party admission is $15 for ZooFriends members and $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 425-0218 or by visiting www.okczoo.recware.com. "Luke Atkinson
