The nonprofit, which works to provide Oklahoma City with quality, accessible and affordable arts programming and education, broke ground on its new home in Automobile Alley this morning, and unveiled its new name: Oklahoma Contemporary.
City Arts Center announced in March 2012 that it would move from its home of 23 years at the Oklahoma State Fair Park to a four-acre location at N. Broadway and N.W. 12th Street.
Christian Keesee, co-founder of City Arts Center and president of the Kirkpatrick Family Fund, said at the time that the organization had outgrown its current building, which once was home to the Omniplex before it moved to its current location and changed its name.
The move to Automobile Alley is expected to be performed in three phases:
• moving the education and exhibit office,
• the creation of a black-box theater and multiuse facility
• and the creation of a contemporary dance and movement facility.
