Black Kids - Partie Traumatic

Fusing a lo-fi audio aesthetic with delightful, catchy songs, the debut full-length from Florida's Black Kids is diverse and wildly appealing.

Most of the songs on "Partie Traumatic" are surprisingly different, especially for a major-label debut, but contain a commonality of being wonderfully strange and well-written.

Indie sex pools underneath "Hurricane Jane," a track with a mellow, electro-lounge start and crashing group choruses, and "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You," a song laced with synthesizer strings and vocals by Reggie Youngblood, sounds reared from years with The Cure's "Disintegration."

There isn't a single discardable cut on "Partie Traumatic," an impossibly fun album peppered with underused female background vocal reinforcement, courtesy of the singer's sister, Ali Youngblood, and Dawn Watley, who both add infectious keyboard and riffing synth accents to match discotheque drumming and bubbly bass.

This "Partie" is positively a party pick.
