Major Jemison has officially announced his candidacy for Ward 2 city council.

The St. John Missionary Baptist Church pastor had been rumored to be considering a council run after filing campaign finance information with the city and a telephone poll last month asked voters their thoughts on Jemison. On Monday his campaign team sent out a press release confirming his candidacy.

"I'm running for Ward 2 because I believe in the people of Oklahoma City and I believe in the forward thrust that our city is currently on," Jemison said in a statement. "Politics can be challenging, but I'm not running against anyone--I'm running for Ward 2 and the people of Oklahoma City."

Jemison is the third candidate to announce in Ward 2. Current councilman Ed Shadid is seeking reelection and James Cooper has also announced his candidacy.

While Jemison said he is not "running against anyone," he said the council has become "polarized."

"During the past few years we have seen a great deal of polarization and separation on the council, where there should be teamwork and unity," Jemison said. "I certainly understand that not everyone can agree on everything all of the time; but our disagreements should strengthen us, not hinder us."

Filing for Oklahoma City council races in wards 2, 5, 6 and 8 will be open Jan. 28-30 at the Oklahoma County Election Board. The primary election will be held March 3 and the general election, if needed, will be April 7.
