Breaking ground

Wellness Now co-chairmen, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and County Commission Chairman Ray Vaughn will be a few of the community leaders in attendance.

The 54-acre facility will have clinical services from the OU Medical Center, community nutrition and cooking classes, immunizations, breast and cervical cancer screenings and parent preparation classes.
“Having clinical services and putting them together with public health services is going to be the way of the future,” Vicki Monks, OCCHD public information officer.
The goal of the facility is to promote and offer programs centered on reducing chronic diseases.

The groundbreaking Monday will commence work on the main building of the facility, which will be the main Oklahoma County Health Department building. Work on the first building is estimated to take about a year, and be done in fall 2012, Monks said.

The OCCHD announced plans for the wellness center May 30. When OCCHD director Gary Cox presented the plan at a July 5 Oklahoma City Council meeting, he said the goal is “to increase the number of Oklahomans who are healthy at every stage of life.”

The groundbreaking ceremony will start at 11 a.m. Monday in between N.E. 63rd Street and N. Martin Luther King Avenue.
