Parents, why not send your children off to camp? Art camp, that is.

For children ages 5 to 13, City Arts Center offers a number of winter-break youth camps taught by artists and art professors.

Kids ages 5 to 7 may attend Patti Morgan’s “Winter Time Sculpting, Sewing and Paper Crafts” class. Participants will build clay gingerbread houses, and sew small gingerbread people to live inside. They also will marble paper to create Christmas cards, paper snowflakes and other decorations.

In the class for 8- to 10-year-olds, art professor Eric Wright will teach and help students to create “Super Sculptures.”

For older children through age 13, Kjelshus Collins’ “Holiday Pottery” class will instruct on creating Christmas presents by hand. Children will make ceramic decorations, ornaments and cards to go with the gifts. The week ends in an art show for the kids to display their creations for their parents.

“By the end of the week, our goal is not so much the product at the end, as it is the process of what they learned and how they create things,” said Robin Huston, City Arts Center director of programming.

The five-day classes run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Monday. Each class costs $135 and is held at City Arts Center, 3000 General Pershing.
