It's estimated around the world, one child dies from hunger every five seconds. With some of those hungry people in the metro's own back yard, a chalk art contest 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday in Norman will give kids the tools to raise awareness. Organizers envision downtown's Legacy Trail covered in pavement masterpieces, themed "Helping the Hungry " Making a Difference."
"One of our goals "¦ is to show kids that they can use art and creativity to make positive change in the world," said Ed Kearns, event publicity chair.
Chalk and refreshments will be provided; all participants " children 18 and younger, and families " need to bring is their creativity and a nonperishable food item for Norman's Food & Shelter for Friends.
PRIZES
The contest promises a variety of prizes, including classes at Norman's Firehouse Art Center, a Kidoodles gift certificate, bowling passes and more.
"Every kid's gonna get some little thing," Kearns said.
The inaugural chalk contest also promotes a Sept. 23 Norman CROP Walk to STOP Hunger, which annually raises funds to fight hunger and poverty worldwide.
Kearns said organizers want kids "to know that there are hungry people not only in the world, but right here in Norman, and to know that they can make a difference in their world."
Registration begins 9 a.m. at the Santa Fe Depot, 200 S. Jones. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 360-3279.
