While most of us were praising Jesus for lower gas prices (Hallelujah! We can afford more lottery tickets!), the price of oil stayed so low for so long that people started losing their jobs — lots of people, lots of jobs. Tulsa lost 1,340 oil-related jobs in the first half of the year.

We are now starting to see those losses spill over into other sectors because, in case you didn’t know, something like one out of seven jobs in Oklahoma is tied to the energy sector. Tulsa World reported a more accurate (and depressing) statistic.

“For every 10 jobs lost in the energy sector in the state, we estimate that an additional six jobs were lost in other sectors statewide,” said Dan Rickman and Hongbo Wang in a new report from Oklahoma State University.

The report also states that Oklahoma could lose 20,000 jobs through 2016.

Ball said oil might stay at $52 for the rest of the year and we need at least $73 a barrel to see growth in the state.

But, like, whatever, right? We are enjoying the cheapest gasoline in 11 years, according to the Fuel Gauge Survey released last week by AAA Oklahoma.

We will take 10 Lucky 7’s, please!
