Chicken-Fried News: Shadid, preservationist

  • Bigstock

After he took his fight against the pending demolition of the old Union Bus Station to court, Councilman Ed Shadid claims Mayor Mick Cornett and the rest of the Oklahoma City Council are now fighting back.

A 27-story office building and parking garage is planned for the bus station site, and the Downtown Design Review Committee voted in January to allow for the demolition of the building, despite a protest from some citizens and a preservation organization.

Shadid is seeking a new hearing on the matter that considers the importance of historic preservation.

Even though developers of the proposed high-rise have promised to paint parts of the building in a color that matches the bus station, preservationists like Shadid believe the structure should be saved and redeveloped, or at least not flattened just to make room for another parking garage.
