Oh no. Reefer madness isn’t only the whacked-out lore borne of mental hygiene films and ’60s-era propaganda movies.
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Muskogee, shared a grave prediction for our country’s future. Legalized marijuana use will “end up in a tragedy,” he recently told CNN’s Crossfire.
He “searched the literature” about this. Plus, you know, he’s a medical doctor.“There’s never been a positive study on recreational marijuana,” he said.
Not exactly. Some studies have determined recreational use is unsafe for children. Most scientific studies, because they’re scientific, are focused on how the drug can be used medically.
Coburn went on to speak about medical pot controversy. Somehow, his deductions about recreational use are seemingly valid to prove medical weed isn’t good either.
An FDA-approved University of California trial concluded, in part, “Based on evidence currently available the Schedule I classification is not tenable; it is not accurate that cannabis has no medical value, or that information on safety is lacking.” Oh, the humanity!
He also said that smoking a joint is the same as smoking nearly an entire pack of cigarettes.
“To smoke it versus take a pill — we have two prescription pills that work,” he said.
Whoops.
Like taking pot pills is totally copacetic? Oh wait. The pills are synthetic cannabinoids. As in not natural. But if the synthetics can be proven safe by Big Pharma ... then what?
He cut himself short on that last point and quickly moved to the fact that all of it’s irrelevant because cannabis is illegal and the “president isn’t enforcing the law.”
Even show host Newt Gingrich gingerly disagreed: “If you believe in the 10th Amendment, then states should have the right to do certain kinds of experiments.”
