Coming up short

Doak, elected to a
four-year term in 2010, wanted to use the resolution to send a message
to the Obama administration that the NAIC would not support “any
legislative action that would deny citizens constitutionally protected
religious rights” by requiring employers to provide birth control
insurance coverage. The would-be resolution earned an attaboy from state
Sen. Ralph Shortey (of “don’t put fetuses in food”/needless legislation
fame), who released a March 5 statement applauding Doak’s “efforts to
protect religious liberties in healthcare.”

Alas, reported last week that Doak couldn’t even rally a single
motion for a vote, so his resolution died March 6. At least Shortey has
his back.
