Quasi-naked women and football " for some it's the best match since the letter S got together with the letter M.
However, those fired up to watch some good old-fashioned sex-violence are getting a cold shower, courtesy of Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett.
Cornett announced Nov. 11 that he is against allowing the Lingerie Football League to play in a public arena in the city. The LFL, which revolves around women in bras and panties playing full-contact football, wanted to establish an Oklahoma City team for its 2011 season.
The league hoped the team would be able to play in the Oklahoma City Arena or possibly the Cox Center. (Chicken-Fried News intern Bucky, hoping to avoid illegal use of hands, was polishing off his résumé to apply as a "back judge.") However, Cornett Cox-blocked the league by saying he was against hosting games in either facility, claiming that the idea had "too many problems to list."
Cornett did not say whether some of those problems would be hundreds of angry phone calls from people who think showing a little ankle is considered soft-core porn, or televangelists predicting a Sodom and Gomorrah-esque smackdown from an angry God. Or not enough tight ends.
The obviously unhappy league chairman Mitchell Mortaza blasted the city's affront to the free marketplace of objectifying women.
"Oklahomans should be provided the opportunity to choose for themselves and not dictated to," Mortaza said in a statement to OKBlitz.com. "I thought our plans were for expansion into Oklahoma City, not North Korea."
When Oklahomans wake up in the morning, don their matching gray unitards and march single-file to their assigned workstation at the potassium refinery, can they do so knowing that their lives will never be enriched by being able to gaze upon the dignified athletes of the LFL?
And here's another question: When does "no" not mean "no," sports fans? Cornett updated his comments Nov. 12, telling OKBlitz.com that he couldn't stop an LFL franchise alone, but that he would oppose the league during an Oklahoma City Council vote.
