What Urban Outfitters was to my college years, Anthropologie is to my young-adult years. It’s like a clothing, accessory and decor wonderland full of high-priced, delightfully quirky/pretty pieces that I totally don’t need, yet covet all the same.
For those living under a discount bin at Walmart (smells like Aqua Net and Doritos), Anthropologie opens next February at Classen Triangle, the geometric neighbor to Classen Curve that will house Whole Foods Market.
Between that, other new stores popping up and the new Concerts on the Curve series, this area of town is turning into a really fabulous spot. Let’s get an update, shall we?
Steven Giles (5850 N. Classen Blvd.; 607-4633) opened in mid-May. The upscale men’s clothing store moved from its previous location in Country Club Village shopping center, where it had been since 2005.
The new space expertly blends the modern look of Classen Curve with Steven Giles’ “proper, dashing gentlemen” appeal with warm woods and dark leather seating. The clothing ranges from formal suits to casual pants and button-ups, plus some lovely accessories and shoes.
And bow ties! I’ve tried to get my husband in a vest and bow tie forever, but he contends I’m trying to turn him into a hipster hobbit. I don’t disagree.
Just a few doors down, BD Home (5840 N. Classen Blvd.; 602-0578) has been open since January, but I’m just now popping in to see the place. Shameful, I know.
The furniture and accessory store carries amazing, modern furniture in low, clean lines. I particularly loved one felt chair in lime green. If you’re not quite ready for the commitment of furniture, BD Home carries a small, great selection of accessories and tableware.
Around the corner, Black Optical looked thisclose to opening, so check back soon. Finally, Winter House Interiors (5710 N. Classen; 607-1199) opened less than two weeks ago. It is spread out over an entire building anchoring the end of Classen Curve and has expanded its space greatly from its previous Northpark Mall location.
Inside the bright space, modular walls create showrooms for the large variety of furniture and accessories — everything from classic and modern to Old World and Asian.
Winter House also still houses the Carwin Shave Shop, now in its own larger space. The shop is expanding its lines of men’s products and accessories and soon will start offering-straight razor shaves. So cool.
All those freshmen stores (plus upperclassmen On a Whim, Red Coyote, Uptown Kids, Barre 3 and Balliet’s) will stay open late tomorrow for Concerts on the Curve, held from 6-9 p.m. the first Thursday of each summer month. The area will come alive with shopping, activities for the kiddies, food, drinks, art and music.
Tomorrow, about a dozen artists — including former NBA player Desmond Mason — will display art (some will even paint live) while bands play. Sounds fun, right? Go.
