Dance Robots, Dance! celebrates robotic anniversary

Now eight members strong, Dance Robots, Dance! is celebrating one year of Robotic Wednesdays at 9 p.m. tonight at The Electro Lounge, 3929 N. May. The weekly gig began as an attempt to bolster the anemic local rave/dance scene by drawing in members from the indie-rock scene.

One year is a big milestone for the DJ collective, and the experiment is still going strong.

"When we started at the Sidecar, one thing we tried to do is to show everyone a different style of DJing," said founding member John Bourke. "After the rave scene died, everyone thought of DJs as only playing house."

VENUE CHANGE
Infusing rock into its mix, DRD began by concentrating on song selection rather than big-name spinners. After a year, Bourke admitted that the music does stray more into dance than rock, but Robotic Wednesdays will see another venue move that might help level it off. The Electro Lounge, 3929 N. May "DRD's post-Sidecar home " is heading next door to the Tower Theater, 425 N.W. 23rd.

"We're really excited because we will have a bigger area and a stage, so we will be able to bring bands through," he said. "To keep it going this long, it's been tough because you have to switch it up it and keep fresh." "Charles Martin
