Disco Bloodbath plans 'highbrow' event

For those who like their blood and guts interspersed with literary references, Disco Bloodbath is going highbrow this year. The fourth-annual gore-themed event takes over The Conservatory on Friday and features some of the choicest cuts from local DJs, as well as an excuse to don ghastly getups months ahead of Halloween.

Friday night's theme is "A Mid-Summer Night's Scream," and one of the event founders, Robyn Webb, is hoping to scare up a good crowd willing to plunge headlong into the Shakespearian theme.

"The music is a big part of it, of course," she said. "But I really like being able to dress up. What's the use of going out if no one is looking at you, and I'd rather be looked at because I've got an interesting outfit than just 'cause I'm a chick."

On tap for the DJ booth are Bone, Ostara, Ed Crunk, Serc, Brian Zero and Stoic, representing a wide range of electro, Eighties and techno dance music.

For this year's Bloodbath, Webb recommends fairy costumes, togas and anything playing to the theme. Copious amounts of blood splatter and flesh wounds are always a good start, too. Attendees are urged to dress for the event, but are warned on its flier that "you'll probably get at least a little bloody throughout the night, no matter what you wear."

Disco Bloodbath starts at 6 p.m. Friday at The Conservatory, 8911 N. Western. Tickets are $6 at the door.
