El Reno readies for annual county fair

Want to prove how tough your tyke is? Well, take your little country girl or boy out to the 53rd annual Canadian County Fair now through Saturday, and enter the kiddo into the tricycle tractor pull and try to win some family bragging rights.

Held at the county fairgrounds in El Reno, the annual event has everything one could expect from an Oklahoma county fair, from livestock and barbecue to showcases of county produce, flowers, food and entertainment.

"We always have the goats, the sheep and the hogs," said Ted Mittelstaedt, county fair board secretary. "But we try to do a lot of things for the kids, as well."

One event, which is for ages 3 to 8 only (sorry, older brother!) is a money scramble set for 5 p.m. Saturday. The kids will be divided into age groups and led to a large tarp covered with wood shavings and peppered with silver coins. For three minutes, the kids will have the chance to scurry around and rake it all in.

The free fair will feature talent shows and music by the Mystery Men gospel quartet and Reba McEntire's fiddle-playing brother, Pake McEntire.

A BMX bicycle stunt team from Dallas also will be there, turning tricks and flips on a ramp for the crowd, Mittelstaedt said.
