Elementary schools set MAPS improvements meetings

With a new school year under way, MAPS for Kids community meetings are picking up at area schools slated for improvements.

Three elementary schools will host the first of their meetings in the next weeks:

" Hillcrest,

" Pierce and

" Edwards.

At the other end of the process, Wilson Elementary, an Arts Integration School, underwent its final design meeting this month in preparation for $2.4 million in MAPS for Kids facility improvements, slated for bidding in October.

Wilson Arts Inc., a group of school supporters, raised an additional $760,000 beyond the MAPS for Kids funding to ensure Wilson's arts integration curriculum could be addressed in the facility's renovation and addition.

The community gatherings are designed to give parents, teachers, students and the community insight and a voice in the renovation and construction process.

Upcoming community meetings, each beginning at 6 p.m., include:

" Tuesday, Sept. 11: Hillcrest Elementary School (cafeteria), 6421 S. Miller

" Thursday, Sept. 13: Pierce Elementary School (cafeteria), 2701 S. Tulsa

" Tuesday, Sept. 18: Edwards Elementary School (cafeteria), 1123 N.E. Grand

" Tuesday, Sept. 18: Lee Elementary School (auditorium), 424 S.W. 29th

" Thursday, Sept. 20: plans for Hoover School site, meeting at Eisenhower Elementary School, 2401 N.W. 115 Terrace

Both Lee and the Hoover site meetings will cover the schematic design stage of the process.

MAPS for Kids funding, $700 million, was approved by Oklahoma City voters in 2001. For more information, call 297-3461 or visit their site. "Emily Jerman
