nd movie historical melodramas that were long on spectacle and short on verifiable history, this may be just what you need. The colors are rich and deep, the settings are authentic and the costumes will have you gasping. Supposedly, this is the story of the rivalries of Queen Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) and her half-sister, Mary Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton); Elizabeth and King Phillip II of Spain; and Elizabeth and her Lady in Waiting Bess Throckmorton (Abbie Cornish) for the attention of Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen); all culminating in the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
Who cares if Elizabeth and Raleigh enjoyed nothing like a romance? Who you gonna believe "? Oxford scholars or Hollywood? Owen is a little stiffer than you'd expect a jolly sea rover like Raleigh to be, but the rest of the cast shines, especially Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush as Elizabeth's chief adviser. What brilliant actors they are. What a silly but enjoyable wallow this is. PG-13
