Filmmaker explores cultural identity using American imagery, iconography

quid copper texture to celebrate and lament the American dream. Optical printing and chemical techniques give the video installation the fluid, 3-D quality and produce an old photograph effect from a future era.

Inspiration for "American Falls" came from Frederic Church's 19th-century painting "Niagara" and from WPA murals of the Thirties, Solomon said.

Also on exhibit at Untitled [ArtSpace] are colorful large-scale prints from collage and printmaking artist Robert Rauschenberg's "Soviet/American Array." Like Solomon's work, Rauschenberg's uses images to explore American identity. Both use collage to create conversation between images within each work.

Solomon's 30-minute, looped installation at Untitled [ArtSpace] is a preview of a larger video installation he is creating for the rotunda at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., which debuts in autumn 2009.
