Former house speaker will not run

Former Oklahoma House Speaker Lance Cargill, R-Harrah, issued a statement late Wednesday saying he will not file for re-election in 2008.

The announcement comes months after Cargill stepped down from the Speaker position when he admitted he was late paying state taxes.

However, Cargill did not mention this or any reason for his decision not to seek re-election as a representative.

"I have decided not to file for the 2008 elections," Cargill said. "It has been an honor to represent eastern Oklahoma County and my hometown of Harrah for eight years in the State House."

Cargill said he remained proud of initiatives he led during his tenure as House Speaker and that he will continue to be active in state politics.

"I am proud of the record of conservative reform that I ran on, consistently voted for, and often succeeded enacting during my time in the legislature," Cargill said. "I look forward to staying engaged in the public debate through initiatives like 100 Ideas and will continue to advance and support an agenda of hope, growth and opportunity for our state and eastern Oklahoma County." - Ben Fenwick
