Former primary competitors endorse Russell

Exactly one week after the primary election, state Senate candidate Steve Russell received endorsements from three of his primary opponents.

The three primary opponents " Jerry Foshee, Melinda Daugherty and Marty Gormley " joined Russell for a Tuesday morning press conference at the state capitol.

Russell is locked in a runoff battle for the Senate 45 district with Kyle Loveless.

"I highly respected him and I respect him even more after the campaign," said Foshee, a former Oklahoma City Council member. "He kept his word. He didn't go negative."

Russell is a decorated war veteran who served more than 20 years in the Army before retiring in 2006. He is making his first run for public office.

In last week's primary, Russell led the field of five candidates at the end of the election with 41 percent of the vote. Loveless came in second, receiving 27 percent of the vote. Because no candidate received more than 50 percent, state law requires a runoff between the top two finishing candidates.

Loveless is a political consultant and small business owner who formerly worked for Congressman Ernest Istook.

The runoff election is set for Aug. 26. The winner will be the state senator from that district as no Democrat applied for the seat. "Scott Cooper
