There are those treks inspired by some greater power from the retail gods. They aren’t explainable, and they only happen when you least expect. Arguably most exciting and elusive are these rare occasions.
Second, there are those trips when you need the perfect thing. It might be a top or a skirt or an accessory. You’ve carefully detailed the item in your head, and the only thing standing between it and the completion of a perfect outfit is actually finding it. Those searches, quite frankly, can be the most exhausting and least fruitful.
Then there are those leisurely expeditions where you strike out on a relaxing stroll for no particular type of merchandise and find treasures untold.
The latter is the kind I had recently, and it was surprisingly something that I’m still not quite sure I need … but I know someone might.
The first sighting was at Eat at Local (2262 W. Main; 928-5600). And no, it’s not something you can eat, although if you’re already there, you might as well give the new spot a try.
Just past the entrance, you’ll find a gift shop of sorts that’s home to take-out salads and other local-themed treasures. Nestled toward the back in a basket you’ll find several hand-knit owls. They’re adorable and beg to be given new homes.
The next day, I stumbled onto some Lumpy Bits, handmade bird dolls that you can get at DNA Galleries (1705 N.W. 16th; 371-2460). Each is made uniquely with different fabrics and materials, and they are all incredibly cute. They’d make an excellent addition to a crib or collection.
They kind of beg to be loved.
Just next door at Collected Thread (557-1141), there’s a whole corner for the kiddos. Specifically, there’s a feltfabric owl pillow that would be the perfect nap partner. The shop owner said she just got them in stock, so be sure to swing by and check them out if you’ve not been in for a while.
I’m not really sure what the symbolism behind all these owls means.
Certain cultures believe it’s a sign of intuition or a warning to pay closer attention to those who might be around you. Some view owls as a sign of protection and power. Whatever the reason, I’m glad I stumbled onto these stuffed sentinels.
No matter what you’re looking for, or even what you’re not, this town has plenty to keep you busy on any kind of shopping trip.
