Guthrie exhibition highlights multilayered works

A month-long art exhibition in Guthrie highlights the multilayered works of Mary Lou and Jeff Stokes, the executive director of the Individual Artists of Oklahoma gallery in Oklahoma City.

The exhibit opened last week and is on display through June 16 at the Grazioso Gallery.

Jeff's exhibit pieces are made from layers of acrylic paints, which he applies to sheets of Plexiglas.

"It's really unique," said gallery director Kenn Bird. "They're almost like transparencies with little microcosms and macrocosms of depth and color."

He said Jeff's work changes colors and textures as they are examined closer.

"The layers of Plexiglas and paint shift the light when you walk near them," he said. "You'll think you have an idea what you're looking at, but when you get close, you'll have an entirely different perspective."

Mary Lou makes similar use of mixed materials for her gallery pieces, Bird said. She layers photos and sketches atop etched aluminum sheets before applying layers of textured pigment and paints.

The Grazioso Gallery, 301 W. Oklahoma, is a new art space that opened in January. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. For more information, call 282-6467.
