Hip to be ’Square



At its inception, Foursquare provoked questions like “But what’s it for?” and “Why do my points matter?” from the non-social-media masses; the hyper-connected felt a collective bond of confusion and embraced the new and somewhat stalker-y app with glee.

Using the most basic reward system out there — acknowledgment — the app slowly began to add badges for accomplishing things like spending four-plus consecutive nights out on the town (Bender Badge) or for checking in after 3 a.m. on a school night (School Night Badge). The Foursquare frenzy eventually included kudos for healthy habits (Gym Rat Badge after 10 or more trips to the gym in 30 days) and civic engagement. 

It was inevitable that the app get local, and it did so by designing badges that display municipal pride. In a recent Foursquare contest,
