News anchor Andrew Speno was cooling his telegenic heels for the week, handed a weeklong suspension after making a wisecrack about Whitney Houston on the March 8 newscast.

About
a story in which the deceased pop singer left her entire estate to her
daughter, Speno quipped that the bounty even included Houston’s crack
pipe.

Speno apologized
on air, but that didn’t avoid a suspension. Since that time, Speno fans
have rallied to his defense, even creating a “Save our Speno” page on
Facebook.

We’re just
glad the whole sordid episode is over. If there’s one facet of
journalism that is no place for frivolity of any kind, it’s TV news.
