John Vanderslice returns to Opolis

Indie rocker John Vanderslice will be playing his fifth show in three years at Norman's Opolis " a remarkable feat, considering even most local bands haven't accomplished that.

"We're pretty loyal to the clubs and promoters we really know and believe in," said Vanderslice, who currently lives in San Francisco. "It's really more than trust " it's that we actually like to be around the people at the Opolis. It's always a really good vibe when we play there."

Vanderslice will be joined by the Bowerbirds for next Wednesday's gig at the Opolis, which will give fans a chance to catch live the same good vibe he captured on "Emerald City," his latest album.

As he was in the process of writing it his girlfriend was on the opposite side of the ocean in France, trying to get an entrance visa. A rigorous schedule prevented him from seeing her, putting a strain on the relationship.

Fortunately for Vanderslice, he made it through the ordeal mostly unscathed, and at 40 years of age, he couldn't be happier.

"I've accomplished way more than I ever thought I would accomplish by this point, definitely," he said. "I'm just a professional musician right now. It's my job to make albums and tour, and that's the craft I love. It took me a long time to learn it, to get to the place where I am, and in many ways, I'm still learning." "Hunter Daniels
