Many people only know it as a title to a Nirvana song, but lithium is a hell of a drug, usually used to treat mental disorders. Matt Jones, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, said although he's no longer on the prescription, he doesn't let bipolar get in the way of his art.
In fact, he often performs "Lithium" when he frequents Midwest City bar Booger Red's, which hosts karaoke several times a week. There are nights when he doesn't feel well enough to perform, but he tries to make it out to the bar every week.
He calls upon karaoke as a stress reliever and a morale boost. Generally speaking, most of the crowd at Booger Red's knows his name.
"It's nice to be known," he said. "If you're known, you're not a nobody."
He said women at the bar often ask him to perform one of his signature songs, Bon Jovi's "Bed of Roses."
"The reason I sing that is there's always somebody there (at the bar) I would lie down in with a bed of roses," Jones said. Unfortunately, the song has yet to work that way for him.
He said he feels when compared to other performers of karaoke, his voice is average. Or, to put it another way, "I have never gotten laid because of karaoke," he said. "Bryan Mangieri
