Now there’s something even more colorful to see at Science Museum Oklahoma besides the earthquake room, mirror maze and shadow box and tree house: colored pencils.

For the second year, the Oklahoma chapter of the nonprofit Colored Pencil Society of America and the Satellite Galleries at Science Museum Oklahoma have joined forces to showcase their popular “Colored Pencil Art Show.”

The exhibit, which opened last Saturday, features works of art that have been completed using only the medium of colored pencils.

“What makes a colored-pencil artist an artist is the time they are willing to invest in their work,” said Jenn Tylbon, chaos coordinator for Science Museum Oklahoma.

Most of the works displayed were created by Oklahoman artists, but some contributions have made their way from surrounding states. The artists are required to work within a theme, and this year’s is “the spectacular colored pencil.”

“They’re supposed to highlight the versatility of the colored pencil as a medium,” Tylbon said. “It’s just a unique opportunity to get really up close and personal to a very unique and original type of art.”
