Oklahoma singer/songwriter K.C. Clifford and her indie-rocker husband, David Broyles " who performs with Dr. Pants " are hosting two summer songwriting camps for children 7 and older at Convergence Creative Space, 1755 N.W. 16th. Young Springsteens will learn the the basics of songwriting from experienced, professional musicians excited to share the love of music to up-and-comers.
"We both have an excitement about the songwriting process," said Clifford, who wrote her first song when she was 7. "We hope to pass that excitement on to the students."
Each four-day session will be divided into two age groups: ages 7-12 from 9 a.m. to noon, and ages 13 and older from 1-4 p.m. The participants need no prior music experience, just a willingness to learn the "vocabulary of songwriting" and be active in the sessions.
The students will write songs, both individually and in collaboration with others, that will be recorded and included in a CD that they will take home when the workshop wraps. Clifford said she hopes this will encourage them to continue to write, although they may still be young.
"We want the students to leave thinking that they could record their own songs," she said. "We want to show the kids that this is something that is doable."
