Medicine Park hosts three-day musical event

More than a dozen local and national blues acts join this weekend for the three-day Mayor's Blues Ball in Medicine Park, 85 miles southwest of the metro.

The free event begins 9 p.m. Friday with a barbecue at AP's club, featuring performances from Delta Paul and The Soul Survivors. Blues bands and solo acts will continue 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday, including performances by Malford Milligan, the Kenny Barker Band and Mississippi duo Cedric Burnside & Lightnin' Malcolm.

ORIGINAL CHARM
Located just east of the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, Medicine Park was established July 4, 1908, and today still retains its original charm, with historic buildings and a creek that runs through the town's center. Mayor Dwight Cope said Medicine Park is a simple place to escape all the hustle and bustle of city life.

"The music speaks for itself," he said. "It's nostalgic. It's a great place to get away from everything else."

The local fire department will provide barbecue for festivalgoers. Beer, soft drinks and water will be available at the department's tent, with proceeds going to fire prevention and education programs. "Paige Lawler
