More than 3,000 people are expected to view the work of Oklahoma's most innovative young artists and participate in a weekend event that is as much a party for creativity as an art opening.
Held annually by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, "Momentum" includes work from Oklahomans under the age of 30. This year's show, which takes place on Friday and Saturday, will feature both visual and interactive art, in a vacant furniture store in south Oklahoma City.
Organizers received hundreds of submissions that artists Paul Medina and George Oswalt narrowed to works by 120 artists for the final exhibition.
"We were looking for quality in the work and diversity, but we also wanted to get work that seemed to be evolved enough that it wasn't completely derivative," Oswalt said. "We looked for work where we could see the evolution and development of a spark of creativity that was their own."
AGENDA
The exhibit's opening is divided into two nights:
" "Downtempo" on Friday and
" "Full Speed" on Saturday.
Oswalt said "Downtempo" is low-key and geared to visitors who want to see the work at a relaxed pace; during "Full Speed," organizers will crank up the music and bring out the more intense and frenetic performance art.
