Norman's Syke! covers Eighties rock classics



Even if it is a tongue-in-cheek Eighties cover band, Syke! is an act to be taken seriously.
"It was like lots of other bands that ever start: It was everybody sitting around and drinking," said drummer Doyle Dodd.
The only influence the band collectively could agree upon was The Cars, but singer Justin Sober said the group has widespread tastes, from Joy Division to Devo to Rick Springfield.
Guitarist Joey Powell said that Syke! performs a lot of songs that are off the radar.
"We play 'Handsome Devil' by The Smiths," Powell said. "Everybody knows 'How Soon is Now?'"

Syke! doesn't adhere to a certain set list " in trying to mix it up, the guys incorporate more than 40 songs. However, they must keep the crowd happy.
"There are crowd favorites that we get yelled at if we don't play during the show," Dodd said, including such staples as a-ha's "Take on Me" and INXS singles.
"Everyone starts dancing because they know the music and then they start drinking," said bassist Luke Enterline. "Then we start drinking. So it kind of feeds us."  "Joshua Michael Torres
