Delicate bells and cymbals swells are split by interlocking blasts of percolating drums that heave and bellow, in the music of New York-based percussion ensemble Loop 2.4.3. While it only has two members, the group can easily mimic an audio army or a precise drum thunderstorm.
Lorne Watson and Thomas Kozumplik are both classically trained musicians and percussion masters who have received numerous grants and fine arts endowments, but Loop's explosive energy is easy to enjoy " and judging from its album's explosive sounds " likely really fun to watch live.
Loop 2.4.3. will serve as guest artist at Oklahoma City University on Monday, teaching at 4 p.m. and performing an 8 p.m. concert. Both the workshop and performance are free and open to the public, and will take place in the Margaret E. Petree Recital Hall inside the Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.
APPRECIATION
Kozumplik said both he and Watson combine their formal training with experience playing in rock 'n' roll and jazz bands to deliver a percussion-based performance that even the unmusically trained can appreciate.
"We aren't approaching the music from an academic point of view " it's a mix of approaches," he said. "Everything is pretty accessible, even though there is some complexity to a lot of the songs. We don't try to make it too classical."
