This is the second year the college has held the conference. While “Caring for Our Home” will focus on ecological sustainability, last year’s conference centered on a broader idea of sustainability in looking at peace, poverty and the earth.
“Sustaining the planet in such a way that future generations of persons will have similar amounts of resources and the quality of life that we enjoy today,” said Mark Davies, OCU dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Hosted by the OCU Oikos Scholars Program for Social and Ecological Responsibility, the conference begins at 9:15 a.m. Sept. 23 and runs through 8 p.m. Sept. 24.
Speakers include, David Orr (pictured), who helped create the first substantially green building on a college campus. Mary Elizabeth Moore and Larry Ward, will speak about religion’s ties to sustainability. Also, two people directly involved with building the Greensburg GreenTown will speak.
“We really hope that we find some positive ways to help educate, not only students, but citizens in general about how we can face some of the great challenges of the 21st century that are related to our living in a more sustainable way,” Davies said.
