Oklahoma City Zoo offers animal gift-giving opportunity

Christmas is the season for giving, and this year, the Oklahoma City Zoo, 2101 N.E. 50th, wants to give back to the animals. For its Wild Wish Tree event, children and families can visit the ZooFriends office through Dec. 31 to pick a gift for the park's animals.

The zoo's Christmas tree is full of ornaments, each one featuring a different present. Children act as secret Santas for the animals, and can choose an ornament off the tree in person or online to pick a gift to give.

WISH TREE
Wild Wish Tree is similar to Salvation Army's Angel Tree, but for animals, said spokeswoman Candice Rennels. The zookeepers compiled a list of "gifts" the animals might need, which includes objects like toys, bottles of cologne, kiddie pools or un-popped popcorn.

"Each item provides enrichment for the animals and it provides stimulation for them," Rennels said. "Everybody, even furry and feathered friends, need gifts."

Each ornament lists a specific item, where families can find the gift, and its price, she added.

The Oklahoma City Zoo accepts gifts every day except Christmas, through Dec. 31. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
