And now for a history lesson from the crusty crew at Chicken-Fried News: Blogs or the Internet didn't exactly exist during the Watergate scandal, but anonymous sources did. The event leading to President Richard Nixon's resignation from the White House was based on the daily newspaper reportage of two now famous Washington Post journalists and their use of unnamed sources. It was a critical element that exposed one of the greatest governmental corruption cases in American history.

Since then, countless news organizations have used unnamed sources to shed light on other forms of corruption from Congress to county jails.

The anonymous sources standard now applies to football game kickoff times.

Tulsa World sports columnist Dave Sittler decided it was in the public's best interest to use an anonymous source and report an urgent and compelling revelation on his blog: The OU-Texas football game in October will be kicked off at 11 a.m.

"Neither school nor the Big 12 Conference has announced a start time for what is already one of the most-anticipated showdowns in the storied history of the Red River Shootout," wrote Sittler, who has been named Oklahoma Sportswriter of the Year nine times. "But sources have confirmed the late-morning start to the Tulsa World, as well as revealing that ABC most likely will select it for a national telecast."

The Tulsa World, which is well respected for its journalism and investigative work, then reprinted the juicy tidbit in Sittler's column. Yes, we know how important OU football is to this state. Yes, we know OU football helps sell newspapers and grab TV ratings for local stations. We just have one question: Did this Red River Deep Throat divulge the kickoff info in the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium parking garage?
