Cheer up, George Clooney, Julie Christie, Cate Blanchett and all those who didn't take home a golden guy on Feb. 24's Academy Awards ceremony. At least you're not Gary Busey.
In E!'s red-carpet coverage before the show started, host Ryan Seacrest was talking with best Actress nominee Laura Linney ("The Savages") and presenter Jennifer Garner ("Juno") on pressing world issues " you know, who's wearing whom " when their tête-à-tête was interrupted by thesp Busey ("Succubus: Hell Bent," anyone?), a Sooner State-raised Oklahoma State University almost-alum.
Busey shook hands with Linney before swooping in to embrace and then kiss a visibly unnerved Garner. Where was her "Daredevil" husband, Ben Affleck, when she needed him? The "vampire-like neck-raping" (as one entertainment Web site put it) raised several questions, like: "Who let him out?" and "What's he even doing there?"
It may be hard to believe " what with his recent work in "The Gingerdead Man" and "Motocross Kids" " but Busey was once a respected actor, nominated for best Actor in 1978 for playing the lead in "The Buddy Holly Story."
Then, in December 1988, a motorcycle ride seemed to change all that. Busey crashed and barely escaped death. He wasn't wearing a helmet. Now, instead of choice roles, he's known for bizarre behavior and mystifying quotes. A sampling:"You know what 'FEAR' stands for? It stands for 'False Evidence Appearing Real.' It's the darkroom where Satan develops his negatives." "Men are failed women at birth." "You know what 'ROMANCE' stands for? It stands for 'Relying On Magnificent And Necessary Compatible Energy.'" "Drinking your own blood is the paradigm of recycling."
Add to that list his perplexing apology to Seacrest on the host's radio show: "You are to me, when you're working, an innocent champion of honesty." - Gazette staff
