Reviewer's grade: D

 

What better way to start the new movie year than with a third-rate remake of a second-rate Asian horror movie? It's either that or get a lobotomy, and the movie ticket costs less. The Somnambulism Twins "? Shannyn Sossamon and Ed Burns "? star as a college student and a cop trying to figure out how to end a ghostly curse before one or both of them get killed.

 

Personally, I was rooting for the curse. People are receiving calls on their cell phones that predict the date and time of their deaths. They also hear themselves dying. (My last words will probably be, "Are you gonna eat that?")

 

The premise is no sillier than the ones that drive most contemporary horror movies "? this one is a remake of a Japanese thriller from 2003 "? but director Eric Valette seems to believe his job was to cut out everything that made the original creepy and substitute lousy acting. The man has a future. Just not in the movies. PG-13
