Oral Roberts University professors file wrongdoing lawsuit

According to a lawsuit filed in Tulsa, John Swails vs. Oral Roberts University, three university professors allege a dirty laundry list of wrongdoing by the administration. Allegations include misuse of university funds, spending of donations on lavish clothing, using the university jet for personal visits and text-messaging underage males at 3 a.m. on school-provided phones.

Targets of the lawsuit include the titular heir of the Roberts empire, Oral's son Richard, and his wife Lindsay.

The lawsuit states that Richard Roberts' sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees, at Roberts' behest, compiled a long list of items that might be considered wrongdoing " although a statement from the university referred to these entries as "rumors and innuendo."

Well, they are some pretty specific rumors and innuendo. According to the lawsuit, the alleged wrongdoing (as compiled by the AP) includes that:

A longtime maintenance employee was fired so an underage male friend of Mrs. Roberts (!) could have his position. Mrs. Roberts had frequent cell phone bills of more than $800 per month, with hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to "underage males who had been provided phones at university expense." Roberts' daughter and several friends used the university jet for a senior trip to Orlando, Fla., and the Bahamas, billing the school for the $29,411 trip as an "evangelistic function of the president." Mrs. Roberts spent more than $39,000 at a particular Chico's clothing store in less than a year, not counting alleged other accounts in Texas and California. "As long as I wear it once on TV, we can charge it off," she is alleged to have said. Alleged "mystery" donors gave Mrs. Roberts a white Lexus SUV and a red Mercedes convertible. The Roberts' daughters homework is alleged to be completed by university and ministry employees at the Roberts' home, then the daughters present the schoolwork as their own, according to the lawsuit. The Roberts' home has been remodeled 11 times in the past 14 years, with Mrs. Roberts allegedly demanding more, according to the lawsuit.

Now, just how did this end up in the hands of the plaintiffs? Well, according to reports, Cantees took her laptop to an ORU student to be fixed, the student backed up the files and then found the documents. The student then allegedly gave copies to the plaintiffs. Eeeep!

So, where to now? According to Mr. and Mrs. Roberts, there's a whole lotta prayin' going on. The regents of ORU have asked for an outside audit and the Roberts told viewers tuned into their live Tulsa area religious station last week that they "¦ just "¦ might "¦ not "¦ be "¦ perfect. Richard Roberts said he wanted to "thank God" that ORU regents made the "right decision" to audit.

Roberts seemed emotional at times, at one point appearing to stifle a sob.

"I want to say how sorry we are, that you partners and the students of ORU have been dragged into something," Roberts said. "The last time I checked I'm not perfect."

"I'll have to say, there is not a perfect person on the face of this earth," Lindsay Roberts said. "I want God to be my defense."

The two then started prayin' faster than Bucky getting pulled over for going 80 in a 45.

According to new claims reported Oct. 13 in the Tulsa World, the lawsuit alleges Richard Roberts allowed a "convicted sexual deviant unrestricted access to the students of the university." The unidentified man allegedly had confessed to exposing himself in a locker room to a 15-year-old male.
