Oklahoma City's Cinco de Mayo Festival has been rescheduled for Sept. 13.
The Oklahoma City Cinco de Mayo festival is the largest in the state and was expected to draw over 20,000 people celebrating Hispanic heritage and culture. Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt mentioned the Cinco de Mayo festival in his State of the City address this year, and Scissortail CDC Executive Director Robert Ruiz thanked him for the recognition as well as his leadership during the COVID-19 crisis. “The mayor knows how important this event is and we appreciate his support,” said Ruiz.
Ruiz said the rescheduled event would be even larger than the original celebration.
“The decision to reschedule is disappointing, but necessary given the current environment and the need for social distancing,” said Ruiz. “We appreciate Scissortail Park working with us to reschedule this celebration and to combine it with our Fiestas Patrias Festival in September. What we are going to see is one huge and joyous celebration instead of two smaller ones.”
Scissortail Park Foundation CEO Maureen Heffernan said the park was looking forward to hosting a successful event later in the year.
“Even though we have to move this event to September, the vibrant spirit of this event which celebrates Mexican culture and heritage will be no less diminished,” she said. “We look forward to being the OKC home of this event for all to enjoy in the city.”
Both festivals rely on sponsorships, and the revenue earned supports educational programs and community outreach done by Scissortail CDC. Ruiz encouraged Oklahomans to make a point of supporting community events like these when the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.
“By September, I hope we have this behind us and are ready to celebrate as a community,” said Ruiz. “This will be a party that is good for our spirits, a great way to show we appreciate and respect one-another’s cultures, and an important tool for supporting educational programs that benefit underserved children. I think we’ll have a record turnout and a party that is fun for everyone.
