Regional Food Bank seeks volunteers to package 4.2 million pounds of food

Want to have fun, get free stuff and change lives, all in one fell swoop? The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, 3355 S. Purdue, will give away vouchers to the Oklahoma City Redhawks to the first 100 volunteers who arrive at 9 a.m. and the first 100 volunteers who show up at 1 p.m. on Saturdays through July. The program starts this Saturday.

The organization urgently needs volunteers to help sort and pack an additional 4.2 million pounds of food and household products by the end of September. Summer increases the workload for the food bank, as children do not have access to school-based breakfast and lunch programs.

To meet the increased need, the Regional Food Bank received a grant to purchase additional food and household products.

"We need to distribute an extra million pounds of product each month," said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank. "Donating a few hours of your time will make a huge difference in the life of a hungry Oklahoman."

Individual volunteer hours are available from 9 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with no appointment necessary. Groups of five to 200 can schedule time by calling 600-3154.
