Saturday Night Live: The Complete Third Season

2008

Three down, 30 to go! NBC's venerable sketch-comedy series "Saturday Night Live" was in full force in its 1977-78 season, creating revolutionary material just fine without Chevy Chase, thank you very much. Much help came from the manic antics of Bill Murray, particularly as nerd Todd DiLamuca, and favored guest host Steve Martin, who debuted "King Tut" and was so in tune with the cast that people today still think he was an official member.

Universal does an excellent job with these full-season sets, which will take you nearly an entire Saturday to watch, start to finish. This one stretches across seven discs, and even manages to cram on a couple of extras. The real draw in that department is the hour-long, laugh-track-free special "Things We Did Last Summer," an anthology of filmed bits showing  how "SNL" stars Murray, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd spent their hiatus. It's not all that funny, but it's a must for completists. Having rented a VHS tape of it many times over from Sound Warehouse many years ago, it's nice to see it preserved on DVD.
