Shawnee dedicates day to local musician

It's not an official holiday yet, but mark your calendars for Monday, a day officially dedicated to local singer/songwriter Samantha Crain by her hometown Shawnee.

City Mayor Chuck Mills applauded Crain and her band The Midnight Shivers for putting on live shows that "frenzy the emotions of all who are listening," in his official proclamation, signed last week.

Mills noted that Crain, a 2008 Gazette Woody Award winner for best Folk Band, is poised to take on the world with her music, which he described as songs that sweep from a "foot-stomping good time" to bring listeners to "heartbreaking tears."

Crain recently received acclaim in American Songwriter magazine and will release her album "The Confiscation: A Musical Novella" through Ramseur Records, a well-known independent folk label, on July 22.    "Joe Wertz
