Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

Reviewer's grade: C

Director Sanaa Hamri ("Something New") and returning screenwriter Elizabeth Chandler ("What a Girl Wants"), working with Ann Brashares' novel for girls "Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood," have taken a surprisingly smart original movie and turned it into a romantic soap opera in this insignificant sequel, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel and America Ferrero return as four best friends who share a magical pair of jeans.

The pants fit all four of them perfectly, and when each wears the jeans, something good happens, usually pertaining to boys, but not exclusively. The first movie worked well and delivered a pleasant surprise because it dealt with the problems of maturing young women in a way that mirrored their maturation process. This is an unpleasant surprise as it over-emotionalizes essentially the same problems and turns them into romantic clich
