At the Winter Olympics in 2002, the difference between a downhill skiing gold medal and no medal stood at 0.65 seconds.

According to business coach and consultant Jim Bain, once workers realize that small differences can make all the difference, they can reach the top of their profession. It’s all about remembering that “professionalism” is spelled with five Ps:

—Purpose;
—Preparation;
—People;
—Priorities; and
—Persistence.

Focus on your purpose, Bain said, and prepare to take advantage of opportunities. Don’t make poor choices in the people with whom your associate; don’t lose sight of your priorities; and never fail to be persistent. —Gazette staff
