The Flaming Lips celebrate alley dedication

Confetti cannons, giant balloons and a monstrous inflated caterpillar creature marked the occasion as fans, freaks and city officials gathered today in Bricktown to celebrate an alley named after local live music legends the Flaming Lips.

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne stood on a stage near the ballpark, surrounded by an entourage of people in Santa suits and alien costumes and rallied the hundreds of fans and spectators that came to watch the event.

Coyne said having an alley rather than a major street was appropriate and that he hoped it would become a place where artists and creative people of all types would flock to.

The alley, which is located between the LiT Lounge and the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, was officially named Flaming Lips Alley after the band in December 2006 after a vote by the Oklahoma City Council. - Joe Wertz
