Beyond a nails-on-a-chalkboard title sequence lies a minor gem of a forgotten TV series in "The Hunger: The Complete First Season." Based in name only on Tony Scott's 1983 vampire film, the anthology show isn't quite pure horror or fantasy "? the best way to describe it is if Rod Serling were a staff writer on "Red Shoe Diaries," and I mean that as a compliment.
Twenty-two episodes are spread across four discs, most dealing with some aspect of the supernatural and all throwing in softcore sex scenes with perfume-commercial production values. For whatever reason, disc three is loaded with stinkers, but the rest are pretty good, and it's easy to find yourself lapping up several in one sitting, especially if you've never seen it before.
"The Hunger" comes from that era when cable originals didn't quite rise to the level of prestige they stand today, but at least offered something different. And it's certainly that! Witness these highlights:
